Inspired by the cannibal horror of Claire Denis's Trouble Every Day and the dangerous nightlife in David Lynch's Blue Velvet, Never My Love aims to explore intimacy and loneliness through the twisted lens of genre filmmaking. As contemporary films are becoming increasingly sexless, it is important (especially as a queer artist) to showcase how love of any kind can lead one to feel seen, wanted, desired, accepted. And a story like this, charged with tension, electronic music and eroticism, can only take place in the multicultural city of Berlin.
The film employed primarily a crew of LGBTQ+ individuals from all over Europe, while the cast is composed of adult film performers. They were cast because of their screen presence and film star charisma, and part of the goal of the film was to embrace the story's sensuality without depicting pornographic moments. While the story of Never My Love works as a standalone short film, the hope is to use it as a proof of concept for a feature film which would follow the main couple through a perilous undertaking.
Never My Love came to me as a pushback to a type of cinema that is increasingly more ironic and devoid of emotions and pathos. With colorful lighting, committed performances, and strong horror elements, it is an audiovisual experience that ultimately leaves viewers feeling warm and tender rather than disturbed and perturbed. I hope you will feel the same.
